Nicolas had wanted to take me out, very much, but Alexander wouldn’t allow it. At the moment, he didn’t want anyone to leave the property. He said it was a safety precaution, but it still felt suffocating.

“Don’t worry,” Nicolas said, leaning in to whisper in my ear as he held my hand tight. We were walking through the hallways of the house. “We can make this work.”

“How?” I asked. “I wanted to see the city.”

“I know, love. And I can promise that if you stick with me, I’ll give you tours of this city, and much grander ones too. But for the moment, we’ll have to make do with the grounds of this house.”

We were on our way back to our room; I could recognize that now.

“What, are we going back to sleep?” I teased.

“Only if you want to, my dear.” He pressed a kiss to my knuckles, then opened the door. “For now, I only need to grab a few things here.”

He walked over to the cabinets, opening them and pulling out a variety of what I recognized to be art supplies. He called for a couple of servants, loading them up with paints, palettes, brushes, and several thick pads of paper.

“Are you going to be painting?” I asked, looking over his shoulder as he rummaged for a few last things.

“Yes. But I was hoping you would join me.”

“What? You know I’m—you know I’m terrible at art, right?”

“Well, you’ve never had me for a teacher,” he said with wink. “And I know with a little incentive, you’ll learn very quickly.” His fingers trailed down my neck, and he leaned in as if about to kiss me but pulled away with a smile at the last second.

“You bastard,” I teased, shoving him lightly on the shoulder. “This is just one of your sick little games.”

He shrugged. “I thought you might enjoy learning to paint the flowers of our garden, along with a lovely picnic of course. I’ve picked a spot where no one should be able to find us.”

Shivers went down my spine at the words. They promised a lot more than just painting and a picnic, and I loved the suggestion. To be taken by him in the open air, surrounded by the flowers with the songs of the birds as a backdrop. It sounded like a dream.

“You naughty thing.” He kissed me. “You’re imagining all sorts of unsavory thoughts, aren’t you?”

“Only what you want me to imagine,” I replied. “You’re the one who put the suggestion out there.”

“While that may be true, it doesn’t erase the fact that your mind is positively dirty, love. Though that’s just how I like it. A woman who can keep up with me is a rare find.”

I laughed, following him out the door as he directed the servants to bring along the supplies he had requested.

We wandered through the gardens until Nicolas found the place he had been talking of. He then ordered the servants to come back with a picnic blanket and breakfast for the two of us.
